Mr. Paterson is an active musician currently involved in a number of jazz trios, quartets and quintets, a big band, a few guitar/piano duets and other musical projects. His love for learning music and sharing it with others has enabled him to play over 20 instruments, the most current being the violin and the viola. He currently has a Strings Orchestra with over 50 students, a music composition class, and a number of guitar students. He continues to actively learn new and innovative ways to help students in their quest to become better musicians.

Kelly Proznick
Fine and Performing Arts Department Head
Chamber Choir,  Vocal Jazz, Concert Choir grade 9 to 12
Senior Choir, Musical Theatre Program

Ms. Proznick is from a musical family, and she started performing at a young age. Involved in dance (RAD Ballet), music and musical theatre all throughout her young life, Ms. Proznick decided to pursue music in university after a summer visit to Montreal where she fell in love with the city and its musical culture. After graduating from Semiahmoo Secondary in South Surrey, she moved to Montreal and acquired a Bachelor of Music from McGill University. She also holds a Bachelor of Education from the University of British Columbia. Ms. Proznick has performed as a trombonist and vocalist in a wide range of musical groups, and has served as a clinician and workshop leader with young bands in British Columbia. She currently conducts DeCoro, an adult choir that is part of Coastal Sound Music Academy and the VSO School of Music Vocal Jazz Ensembles. Ms. Proznick and her husband Jesse Cahill live in New Westminster with their fat fuzzy cat Magnus, where they have no TV but a large and diverse record collection.

Steve Clements
Concert Bands, Jazz Bands, Musical Theatre Orchestra Director

      Steve Clements has been a music educator since 2000. A graduate of the Jazz Studies Program at Capilano University, he also holds a degree in music education from the University of British Columbia. As a founding member of such diverse ensembles as Mambo Jambo, the Barclay Singers, malagrupa, and as a member of the Capilano “A” Band, Steve has gigged and played in Victoria and Vancouver, and had the privilege to play alongside such fantastic musicians as Ingrid Jensen, Arnie Chycoski, and Phil Nimmons.  Steve's current passion project is "The Noxious Obs Society", a collection of current NWSS students and alumni that play together as a street brass band.
      As a father, husband, and New West resident, Steve loves working at NWSS and teaching the fantastic students there. Currently working hard on developing a decent potbelly, Steve is about halfway there now, and with some patience and fortitude, may eventually succeed.
Steve has little to say here, but he refers us all to the great enlightened dude of dudes, the Dalai Lama, who said simply:

“Share your knowledge. It’s a way to achieve immortality.”

Donate to NWSS Music!

Much of our ability to purchase new equipment and instruments, as well as maintain repairs, is realized through donations. We appreciate any support you may be able to offer the NWSS Music department and our students.

Donations can come in all shapes and sizes...

We are ACCEPTING donations of all kinds, whether it be cash or cheque, or used instruments of all sorts.

Our goals are:

  • to provide good quality instruments to students who need them;
  • to provide scholarships for our students’ future studies;
  • to make our band and choir trips affordable for everyone.

Gifts large and small are very much appreciated.  We currently do not need any pianos, although excellent, high quality pianos might be useful.

Make a gift in honour of your favourite student, teacher or in memory of a loved one – or simply because you love music and the opportunity for students to learn and perform. It’s a wonderful way to support the music program which means so much to our students, their families and our community.

Leave a legacy of harmony!

For more information on the many ways you can make a gift, email Miss Proznick (kproznick@sd40.bc.ca) or Mr. Clements (sclements@sd40.bc.ca)
